November 2024

Monthly Recap

November at Tiger Cub Immersion School was dedicated to exploring the season of “Autumn.” Throughout the month, we learned about the various changes we experience during this time of transition.

One of the more visible changes that autumn brings is in the colorful transformation of leaves. In class, we talked about the scientific process of leaves changing color, exploring how shorter days and cooler temperatures cause trees to reduce the amount of green chlorophyll in leaves as they prepare to shed them for winter, all the while revealing the vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds hidden within them. We also read various books, such as "Leaf Man" and "The Leaf Thief," and worked on many crafts that explored this beautiful transformation. In addition, we also explored the changes in weather patterns that come with autumn. We talked about the variety of weather conditions we experience in autumn and learned about how to dress appropriately for each one.

Our students also worked hard this month on expanding their vocabulary. We read stories such as “Leaves in the Wind” and “It’s Raining” and learned to recognize and write the characters for 秋 (autumn), 天 (sky), 叶 (leaf), 雨 (rain), 雪 (snow), 阴 (cloudy), 阳 (sunny), and others. We also read a storied called “Big and Small” and practiced making sentences comparing the sizes of different objects. In addition, students enjoyed learning new songs such as "The Autumn Wind Blows," "Colors," and "Counting Stars," as well as traditional poems, such as “The Wind.” Students also worked on their English skills through listening to various fun stories and hands-on activities that explore the alphabet.

Building on the theme of autumn, we also learned about celebrating good harvests and the importance of expressing our gratitude, all in the spirit of Thanksgiving. We read stories such as “I Want Friends” and “What to Eat on Thanksgiving,” as well as songs such as “Give Me a Hug” and Listen to Me and Say Thank You.” We also worked on crafts of scarecrows and turkeys, as well as thank-you cards to show our gratitude to those who care about us. On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we also welcomed families to join us in the school for our annual Thanksgiving potluck, where we shared each other’s food and company, marking a wonderful end to an exciting month of learning and fun.

Looking ahead to December, we will be exploring the next season, “Winter,” where students will build upon their understanding of seasonal changes as they learn what makes winter a season full of magic.

Fall Landscapes

Students painted long leaves that they pressed onto paper to make tall “trees” in their depictions of the fall landscape.

Dress for the Weather

Students cut out pictures of various articles of clothing and then sorted and pasted each article in the appropriate column based on whether it is suitable for sunny and rainy days.

“It’s Raining”

Students read a new story called “It’s Raining” and practiced writing the characters 雨 (rain), 月 (moon), 阴 (cloudy), 阳 (sunny).

Leaf Sudoku

Students cut and pasted pictures of different leaves to complete the 4x4 Sudoku grid, making sure each row and column included only one of each leaf design.

Tracing Letters

Students practiced tracing alphabet letters.

Turkey Headdress

Students cut and folded strips of colored paper, drew in feathers and eyes, and pasted the beak and snood onto a brown headband to create a turkey headdress.

Corn Painting

Using a corncob, students painted a picture of a pumpkin.

Fall Harvest

Using air clay, students shaped and molded fall vegetables and crops such as chili peppers, corn, and citrus fruits to create a harvest basket.

Thankful for You

Students used their handprints to make “thankful turkey” cards.

Thanksgiving Potluck

We held a potluck at the school on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We had a fantastic time eating all the delicious food that our families brought. Thank you to our TCIS Families for joining us!
