Welcome to our second week of summer camp, where we continued exploring “Artistic Expression: Artists and Techniques!”
This week, we discovered a variety of new artists, including Piet Mondrian, Wu Guanzhong, Jackson Pollack, and George Seurat. We painted between the lines using bold primary colors like Mondrian, experimented with energetic drip painting like Pollack, and explored pointillism by creating artwork with dots, just like Seurat. We were also inspired by Wu Guanzhong's expressive brushwork to make our own nature-inspired compositions.
To spark our students' creativity, we read several artful stories, including “The Dot,” “Meet Piet Mondrian,” “Art Class Splatter,” “Oh Olive!,” and “The Polka Dot.” These books helped us think like artists and explore different materials and techniques. Throughout the week, we cut and layered paper, squeezed glue, painted with watercolors, and made vibrant, original pieces inspired by the masters.
For our cooking class this week, we made parfaits using yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit. Students learned to properly hold safety knives and scooping with spoons while making their own delicious creations.
Next week, we dive into our new theme: “Ocean Exploration: Beaches and Seashells!” We are excited to make a splash with hands-on science, stories, and sea-inspired creations.
We hope that everyone enjoy the long weekend and have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
Students painted a grid with red, yellow, and blue colors, then added sunflowers to the grid, drawing inspiration from Mondrian's bold color-blocking technique found his "Compositions" and from his love of painting flowers.
Students used red, green, and blue watercolors to paint their own poppies, inspired by van Gogh’s famous Poppy series.
“Spring Like Threads” is a Chinese painting created by artist Wu Guanzhong. In Wu's work, we see an abundance of lines=—distorted, twisted, and fantastical. Students used cotton thread and paint to imitate the master's style and created their own versions of Spring Like Threads.
Using a drip painting technique inspired by Jackson Pollack, students created their own crazy Pollack Hair.
Drawing from the styles of George Seurat and Yayoi Kusama, students painted dots in patterns to form creative images.
Students cut out facial features and reassembled them to create self-portraits inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso.
Students squeezed glue to create designs, sprinkled salt on top, and added watercolors to produce textured salt paintings.
This week, students layered yogurt, jam, granolas, and strawberries to assemble their own strawberry parfaits to enjoy at home.
On Wednesday, Coach Evan led the students in a soccer class. Throughout the week, they also enjoyed running and playing on the playground.
