Summer Camp Newsletters

Week 2
(7/1/2024 – 7/5/2024)

Weekly Recap

Our second week of Summer Camp was wonderfully interesting. For the next two weeks, our focus is on “Animals,” which we will be exploring from many directions.

This week, we learned about the life cycles of various species of animals. We compared the life cycle of turtles to that of butterflies to highlight how vastly different animals can be—the former are born in roughly the same form that they will remain throughout their lives, while the latter will completely disintegrate as they metamorphose from young caterpillars to adult butterflies.

We also investigated differences in habitat, behavior, and diet among species. We explored differences between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and learned about which species we can expect to find in each. We also learned to categorize animals based on whether they crawl or fly, as well as what they eat to survive. We even had the chance to observe snails up close!

Meanwhile, in our cooking class this week, we learned to make sandwiches. Students layered bread, lettuce, tomato, ham, and cheese together to build up their sandwiches while applying a healthy amount of mayonnaise to bind it all together.

Overall, it was a fun and eventful week for all of us, and we can’t wait to see what the next week will hold for us. Stay tuned!

Animal Life Cycles: Turtles

Students learned about the life cycle of turtles in detail, and afterwards, they created folding books to summarize their understanding.

Animal Life Cycles: Butterflies

Expanding on their knowledge of life cycles, students created 3-D models of the 4 stages of a butterfly's life cycle. A butterfly starts off as an egg, hatches into caterpillars, wraps itself into a chrysalis, and completes its metamorphosis into an adult butterfly.

Underwater World

Students constructed 3-D models of aquatic ecosystems using blue construction paper and pictures of sea animals.

Interior Design for Squirrels

Students reimagined habitats for squirrels as they built a model of what an ideal home looks like.

Crawl or Fly

Students categorized animals based on whether they typically crawl or fly.

Making Bird Feeders

Students created and decorated bird feeders using milk cartons and twigs.

Observing Snails

Students observed snails using magnifying glasses to learn more about their slow movement and the slimy trails they make.

Bird Origami

Students practiced folding origami birds.

Weekly Cooking Class: Making Sandwiches

Students this week learned to make sandwiches. The ingredients we used were bread, lettuce, tomato, ham, cheese, and mayonnaise. Each student worked hard to assemble their own to take home.

Run, Jump, Hop!

The students enjoyed playing outside pretending to be animals that can run, jump, and hop! Additionally, on Wednesday, Coach John guided the students through their weekly soccer class where they practiced their skills.
